Lochaber Athletic Club
The club was formed in December 1956 by a group of local athletes from various organisations who met at 'McRae's croft' in Fort William, which was near where the Nevis bridge roundabout is now situated and decided to form a single club to cover the Lochaber area. Among those attending the inaugural meeting were previous Ben Nevis race winners, cross-country, track and road runners.

The club has flourished since that first meeting and continues to do so. One of the largest growth areas has been the ladies section which began meeting on a Tuesday and Thursday night for a gentle jog in the winter of 1995. With about 10 ladies turning up regularly throughout the winter, by the time the clocks changed, they were venturing up Glen Nevis forestry tracks away from the people and traffic. Soon they were competing in the winter league where the female competitive streak soon started to develop!

The ladies section is definitely the most social!!
There are regular nights out for Christmas and weekends away
In 1996 six ladies took part in a Three Peaks Challenge - Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon - finishing in around 20 hours!
Last year eight ladies completed the West Highland Way in four days. (96 miles!)

The mens section has also enjoyed steady growth, It,s main strength can always be seen during the annual Ben Nevis Race, in which the club has produced many champions over its long history. There are also less gruling events throughout the year including a full summer of Hill Racing, our own Winter League and numerous road and cross country events which teams travel to. Off course there are also a lot of members who just like the social side of training.

Anyone is welcome to join us:
Tuesday and Thursday nights we meet at 6 pm at Lochaber Leisure Centre. Most nights we do an organised session or a group steady run, but nobody gets left behind!
What you need to bring:-
warm clothing (bright if possible), a good pair of running shoes and a light wind proof jacket, hat and gloves.
