Sea Kayaking

Sea kayaking is one of the fastest growing branches of paddlesport. The West Highland seaboard provides some of the best opportunities in Britain and the Lochaber coastline is one of the jewels in that crown. The unspoiled scenery, wildlife and diversity of paddling opportunities make for a winning combination. Here's a few locations:

Loch Sunart - a long fiord-like arm of the sea that offers beautiful scenery and in its eastern half, relatively sheltered water

Ardnamurchan peninsula - superb cliff coastline and sandy beaches near the Point which is the westernmost tip of mainland Britain

Arisaig has islands and reefs close by and further out lie the Small Isles of Eigg, Rum, Muck and Canna.

Loch Nevis and Loch Hourn are great places to explore in their own right or use to access "Scotland's last wilderness" - the Knoydart peninsula

Sea kayaking in Lochaber is possible year-round although spring through to autumn is likely to give the best weather. It's a good area for the novice paddler because strong tides are found in only a few places and the sealochs long inlets provide sheltered abundant sheltered water.

One of the special treats of Lochaber seakayaking is the abundance and diversity of wildlife that can be seen when afloat. Encounters with otters, porpoises and seals are not uncommon. Around the Small Isles. you can see huge numbers of seabirds and have close encounters with Minke whales.
